Lisa Baldwin and Dave Haney play acoustic music that includes Lisa’s original songs, bluegrass, country, traditional folk, and the work of contemporary singer-songwriters.  Their debut CD, Where We Belong, was released in February 1998 and reissued in 2004 on Rackettown Music and has received considerable airplay on acoustic-oriented stations throughout the US and in Europe.  The CD has received favorable reviews in Dirty Linen, Bluegrass Unlimited, The Country Music News, and other national and regional publications.  Tracks from the CD are featured on a nationally distributed compilation produced by Crossroads magazine and on an Oasis acoustic music sampler.  Along with Katy Taylor, Steve Lewis, Scott Freeman, and other Boone area musicians,  Lisa appears on two CDs produced by Hugh Sturgill. One is entitled Warm Covers for Cold Nights, and the other is Cheap Joe Miller’s Blue Ridge Mountain Holiday Music Sampler. Lisa and Dave also appear on Walker Street Opry and Friends, a CD produced by Blaine Anderson and featuring various Alabama musicians. Before moving to the Boone, NC area, Lisa and Dave lived in Notasulga, AL, and worked as a duo from 1991 until 2001.  In addition to regular appearances at various venues in Auburn, AL, they played at clubs that include the Kaffee Klatsch in Huntsville, AL; the 1048 Club in Montgomery, AL; the Loft in Columbus, Georgia; and the Freight Room and Eddie’s Attic in Decatur, Georgia.  At Eddie’s Attic they opened for artists such as Carrie Newcomer and Eric Taylor.  Their festival bookings have included Birmingham’s City Stages; the Frank Brown International Songwriter’s Festival in Orange Beach, AL; Jubilee City Fest in Montgomery; the Old Timer’s Festival in Blairsville, Georgia; the Uptown Jam in Columbus, Georgia; and the Black Mountain, NC, Music Festival.  They have also played at the Goat Day Festival in Blountstown, Florida, the Songwriters’ Showcase at the IBMA World of Bluegrass in Louisville, Kentucky, Sarah Lawrence College and Syracuse’s Westcott Community Center in New York, Panoply Arts Festival in Huntsville, AL, and the Hank Williams Memorial Festival in Georgiana, AL.

Lisa, a SESAC-affiliated songwriter, has also performed in Nashville at The Sutler, Douglas Corner, the Broken Spoke, Davis-Kidd Bookstore, Gibson’s Guitar Bar, and Radio Café. With the bluegrass band Dirt Road, they played in Alabama and Georgia in 2000-2001 and recorded a CD with band members Brett Martin (banjo), John Narramore (dobro) and Mark McKenzie (bass).  After moving to North Carolina they played at the Winter Folk Festival and the Cabbell Concert at Appalachian State University, at Jimmy’s Java Coffeehouse in Boone, at the Hometown Opry and the Heritage Festival in Wilkesboro, at Drips Coffeehouse in Hickory, at the Watauga County Arts Councils “Concerts on the Lawn” series in Boone,  at the Andy Griffith Playhouse in Mt. Airy, and at the Mountainhome Music concert series in Boone. Lisa has also played at the Ashe County Civic Center with Katy Taylor and friends. In 2013 they performed at the Rhythm and Roots festival in Bristol Tennessee/Virginia, and in North Carolina they have played at the River House Inn. While in Hackettstown, New Jersey from 2016 to 2018, serving as the presidential couple at Centenary University, they performed at the Centenary Stage Company, the Hackettstown Spring Fling, the Heartland Hayride radio show, and other area venues. It took living in New Jersey for Dave to get the banjo back out and for the duo to add more old-time Appalachian music to their repertoire. After three years in Hiram, Ohio, where Dave was president of Hiram College, they are now enjoying retirement in Western Pennsylvania.

Lisa Baldwin was raised in Huntsville, AL, in a family with strong roots in country and gospel music.  She began performing in 1982 in the Auburn, AL area with the Wonder Dawgs and the Walnut Hill String Authority.  Lisa plays guitar and keyboard, sings lead and harmony, and writes the duo’s original material.  Since 1995, Lisa has taken her educational children’s music program, Learning Through Song, to child development centers, libraries, schools, community programs, and festivals.  This highly interactive program combines singing, playing instruments, reading, movement, and other activities both fun and educational.  With her sister Melinda Mills she has recorded a children’s CD, We’re Learning Through Song.  She now has a children’s  program called Music, Minds, and Motion. Lisa holds a master’s degree in Appalachian Studies from Appalachian State University, where she studied the storytelling Hicks family. 

Dave Haney grew up near Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he began to perform folk material in coffee houses in his late teens.  For fifteen years he played in bluegrass bands in the Northeast.  As guitarist and lead singer with Boston’s Joe Val and the New England Bluegrass Boys, he recorded two albums on Rounder Records, toured in the US, Canada, and Europe, and performed several times on A Prairie Home Companion.  Some of his work with Joe Val is available on Rounder CD 11537, Diamond Joe; Rounder CD  0507, Mama’s Hand: Bluegrass and Mountain Songs About Mother; and Rounder CD The Real Music Box: 25 Years of Rounder Records. He has recorded an album with Bay State Bluegrass on Double Play Records (out of print); this band can also be heard in the background on Brian Wilson’s 1988 solo album, reissued on Rhino records (79960).  In 2009 he co-produced, played guitar, and sang on Eric Ellis’s CD, Every Night Before Breakfast (Blue Banjo Records 001). With Lisa, Dave plays guitar, mandolin, and harmonica and sings lead and harmony.
